Biomethane/RNG in Canada: areas of application and incentives
In Canada, biomethane/RNG not only guarantees the decarbonization of organic waste (from landfill, WWT and livestock waste), but can also replace fossil fuels in other areas: transport, heating and industrial processes. Regulations are already in place at the local level that encourage the use of biomethane/RNG. In Quebec, for example, gas distribution companies must ensure that 5% comes from biomethane/RNG by 2025. In Quebec, incentives for new projects are also available, while at the national level carbon tax and the Clean Fuel Regulation have been implemented, which aim to reduce emissions in the transport sector. The RNG Coalition operates throughout North America to disseminate knowledge on biomethane/RNG and to support industry players.
