Finland: Agriculture Driving the Growth of Biogas
In Finland, agriculture and biomass are strategic resources, supporting both food production and renewable energy generation. In this context, MTK, the country's leading organization representing farmers, forest owners, and rural entrepreneurs, promotes the sustainable use of natural resources. Farm-scale biogas plants are playing an increasingly important role, enabling farmers to convert agricultural residues and by-products into renewable energy while creating new income opportunities. This circular model is completed by returning digestate to the soil as a natural fertilizer. Thanks to this approach, Finnish agriculture is contributing to the energy transition by combining food production, biomass valorization, and renewable energy development.
