Food waste and anaerobic digestion in the UK: how a good communication strategy can help the sector
Landfill and Waste
Food waste is a phenomena which, in recent years, has reached levels that cause it to require urgent measures to be taken around the world. In the UK, for example, approximately 10,000,000 tonnes of food waste are produced each year (70% are domestic waste and the remaining part is waste from the manufacturing industry). In the country, only 20% of domestic waste is processed in anaerobic digestion plants. Yet anaerobic digestion is the most suitable solution to try and recover this waste and turn it into energy. BioteCH4, for example, with its 6 AD plants in the UK processes approximately 500,000 tons of food waste a year and plans to increase its capacity in the next 3 or 4 years. We spoke with Lee Dobinson, the company’s Commercial Director, to try to understand what the key to reviving the sector of anaerobic digestion in the country is. The answer? Communication!
