Is decarbonising the naval sector with biomethane/RNG a possibility?
Sustainable mobility
The naval sector is characterised by truly impressive numbers: oil consumption of about 300 million tonnes per year, corresponding to about 700-800 million tonnes of CO2 emitted, or 3% of global CO2 emissions. This is why biofuels such as biomethane/RNG, hydrogen or bioethanol are crucial for the decarbonisation of this sector. But what needs to be taken into consideration in order to achieve this? First and foremost, the availability of such fuels. Suffice to say that to power a single ship – that consumes 50,000 tonnes of fuel/year – a dedicated biogas plant producing at least 10,000 m3 of biomethane per hour would be needed.
