Italy: Biomethane/RNG sustainability and the UNITS 11567 Technical Specification
Market and policy
According to the current biomethane/RNG Decree, the sustainability of biofuels depends on two factors: greenhouse gas emissions along the entire production chain lower than those of fossil fuels and the non-exploitation of the carbon stock contained in soils. To qualify the sustainability of biomethane, however, it is necessary to qualify all the organisations that operate in the chain through the UNITS 11567 Technical Specification. This specification helps operators to build an information management system and ensuring compliance with specific requirements. This theme is explored in more depth in this interview with Antonio Panvini, member of the Italian Thermotechnical Committee.
