Residual Biomass: Sustainability Will Be the Decisive Factor
In this interview, Wolfdietrich Peiker, Head of Press and Public Relations at Atmosfair, a German non-profit organization dedicated to developing climate protection projects and reducing CO₂ emissions, explains why sustainability criteria will become increasingly decisive for the future of bioenergy. Reducing emissions alone will no longer be enough: projects will also need to protect human rights, safeguard the environment, and comply with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to Peiker, these principles also apply to biogas and biomethane produced from agricultural and livestock residues, promoting the sustainable use of biomass while protecting local ecosystems and actively involving local communities so that the benefits of the energy transition are shared.
