SMART Initiative: how to enhance organic waste by transforming it into biomethane/RNG
Applications and technologies
According to the World Bank, the quantity of waste produced is expected to grow by 70% by 2050, but this problem can become a solution thanks to anaerobic digestion that allows generating biogas to produce energy or be transformed into biomethane/RNG and be used as a green fuel. The RNG Coalition association has promoted the SMART Initiative (Sustainable Methane Abatement & Recycling Timeline) with which it intends to capture and transform the methane produced by 43 thousand organic waste collection sites in North America, which is currently burned and dispersed in the atmosphere.
