The potential in Italy for the collection of organic waste to produce biomethane/RNG
Applications and technologies
With a potential resource of 9 million tonnes of differentiated organic waste (with 6 and a half million tonnes collected in 2016), Italy is one of the European countries with the highest potential for the production of biomethane/RNG from OFMSW. Logically, the first companies to produce and supply it to the grid have been waste disposal companies. Italian businesses have thus proved very receptive in exploiting this potential, now sending more organic waste to anaerobic digestion plants than to composting plants.
