Biochar as a synergy between anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis
Anaerobic digestion
In this interview, Biochar Europe, the European association representing the biochar and pyrolysis industry, explains the possible synergies between anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis. Both processes enable energy generation and emission reduction. One of the synergies lies in the role of digestate, which can be used as a feedstock for the pyrolysis process, where it is decomposed in the absence of oxygen to generate biochar. Biochar stabilises carbon and sequesters it in the long term, reducing CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions.
