Digestate is a key element to complete the biogas value chain, representing an opportunity that is still largely untapped. At CIRCE, a Spanish technology center dedicated to energy and environmental innovation, studies are carried out both at a techno-economic and laboratory level to evaluate its quality, composition, and agricultural applications. Analyses show that, depending on the feedstock, digestate can be a high-quality fertilizer, rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic matter. The main obstacle to its valorization is the lack of clear regulations. Once these are established, all accumulated knowledge can be applied in practice, turning digestate into a premium and sustainable product.
