Biomethane in Germany: Applications and Prospects

In Germany, in line with the provisions of the Building Energy Act, biomethane is mainly used for energy production through cogeneration, and in the thermal sector, both for district heating and residential heating. Its use in transport, however, is less common, as it is not incentivized under the current legislation. Energie Schwaben, a company providing energy supply and distribution services in the Bavarian Swabia region, and a buyer and marketer of biomethane, shares insights on how the outlook for the German biomethane sector could be improved by addressing costs, bureaucracy, and regulatory frameworks.
