Biomethane in Ukraine: rapid growth and upcoming challenges
Market and policy
In recent years, Ukraine has experienced strong growth in the biogas and biomethane sector. Currently, around 100 MW of installed capacity is used for electricity production from biogas, and seven anaerobic digestion plants dedicated to biomethane are active: three are already operational, and four more are on the way. According to the Director of the Gas Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, biomethane is essential to replace natural gas and ensure sustainable energy distribution. The challenges, but also the opportunities in this sector, are similar to those in Poland, opening up interesting prospects for cooperation between the two countries.
