Carrefour España: towards carbon neutrality by 2040 with 3150 t/year of organic waste transformed into compost and biomethane
Applications and technologies
Carrefour Spain intends to become carbon neutral in the e-commerce sector by 2030 and in 2040 for all other activities. For this reason, it has introduced a series of actions aimed at reducing emissions: compostable and recyclable packaging, installation of photovoltaic panels on the roofs of 130 supermarkets, 50% reduction in waste generated by points of sale by 2025 and enhancement of the same. In fact, Carrefour Spain generates about 3,150 tons/year of organic waste (expired or unsellable food), which is transformed into 2,700 tons of compost and biomethane that is then fed into the grid.
