Global biogas and biomethane potential according to the IEA: Brazil leads
Market and policy
Greg Molnár, Gas Analyst at the IEA, explains in this interview that biogas can play a key role in global decarbonization. Since 2010, production has doubled, reaching 50 billion cubic meters in 2024, with an increasing share of biomethane.
According to the IEA, using today’s available organic waste, it would be possible to produce 1,000 billion cubic meters per year, equal to a quarter of global gas demand, especially in emerging markets.
The largest potential is in Brazil, at around 125 billion cubic meters.
