The environmental and financial benefits of biogas and biomethane in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Market and policy
In the city of Rio de Janeiro the disposal of urban organic waste is still a problem that calls for particular attention. The Federal University of Minas Gerais has been assessing how biogas can help the city environmentally and financially by implementing an extra-dry methanisation system. Using this system avoids the need to dispose of waste in landfills, reduces greenhouse gas emissions (eliminating 1.2 tons of CO2 per ton of waste), and saves 30,000 Euros a month by substituting fuel used to transport waste to landfills with biomethane.
