Bioenergy and social acceptance: Why community engagement makes a difference
Research
In this interview, Bruno Gagnon, Manager at Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service, discusses the key factors influencing the social acceptance of bioenergy projects in different local contexts. He explains that acceptance depends on the perspectives of three main stakeholder groups: local communities, the wider public, and industry. Gagnon highlights the importance of ensuring that the benefits and risks of bioenergy projects are shared fairly, while actively involving communities in decision-making. According to him, projects are more likely to succeed when they reflect local priorities, make use of local resources, and are developed with community engagement rather than being imposed from the outside.
