Romania: biogas production from biomass on post-mining land
In this interview, Ioana Ionel of the Politehnica University of Timișoara discusses how biomass cultivated on former coal mining waste sites, combined with locally available fruit residues, can be used for anaerobic co-digestion to produce biogas. She highlights how this approach supports the ecological restoration of degraded post-mining landscapes, reduces transportation needs by relying on local feedstocks, and creates new economic opportunities for communities affected by the closure of coal mines. According to Prof. Ionel, this integrated model demonstrates how renewable energy production can drive both environmental regeneration and sustainable regional development.
