Biomethane/RNG in the USA: focus on eRINs and biointermediates
Market and policy
The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) programme provides RINs, or credits for the production of biomethane (or renewable natural gas). eRINs, or credits generated by biogas projects for the production of energy to power electric vehicles, were introduced by the EPA to have greater traceability and to monitor any fraud in this area. When biomethane/RNG is used as a raw material to produce other fuels, it is called a "biointermediate".
