Brazil speeds up on biomethane: what changes with the new mandate – interview with ANP
Market and policy
Fábio da Silva Vinhado, Deputy Superintendent at ANP – the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels, explains the Agency’s work on the new biomethane mandate. The Brazilian mandate, part of the “Fuel of the Future” law, requires natural gas producers and importers to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 1% starting in 2026, with a long-term target of up to 10%. The measure aims to boost a sector that already counts several authorised plants. ANP has been working since 2015 on standards and quality control for plants using agricultural and urban waste and is now ready to take on this new challenge, collaborating with producers and operators to define the rules of the national mandate.
