Biogas and Biomethane in Poland: Great Potential, Development Still Held Back
Market and policy
As explained by Beata Wiszniewska (Regulation and Advocacy, Polska Grupa Biogazowa), Poland is a large agricultural country with strong potential for biogas and biomethane production. Despite this, the sector remains underdeveloped, with around 400 small-scale plants producing energy. To date, only one biomethane plant is in operation, while a second small-scale facility is expected to start operating soon. According to Beata, growth is being hindered by the lack of a stable development strategy and by lengthy, complex administrative procedures. France is often cited as a positive model, thanks to clearer incentives and stronger involvement of farmers, industry stakeholders, and public institutions.
