Germany inaugurates the new biomethane plant at Biocraft Nohra
A new biomethane production plant has officially started operations in Germany at the Biocraft Nohra site, operated by Avrio Energy Group. The project marks another step forward in the decarbonisation of the energy sector. Located in Thuringia, the facility processes around 36,000 tonnes of biomass per year, consisting mainly of livestock manure. The biogas is upgraded to biomethane using membrane upgrading technology, with a processing capacity of 300 Sm³/h. The plant will produce approximately 22.5 GWh of biomethane annually, which will be injected into the natural gas grid for use in heating, industry and transport, as well as 5.5 GWh of electricity. The existing combined heat and power (CHP) units will continue to operate flexibly, adjusting electricity generation according to market demand. Designed with a long-term vision, the site is ready for future expansions, including the integration of a CO₂ liquefaction plant. The project demonstrates how existing facilities can be successfully upgraded and repurposed, increasing operational flexibility and making a significant contribution to the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
