Use of straw pellets for biogas production: research from Germany
Research
From the HAWK University in Hildesheim, Germany, the report "The use of straw pellets in agricultural biogas plants" examines the advantages and disadvantages of using this substrate for biogas production. As Professor Achim Loewen explains, straw, due to its structure, can cause problems by forming floating layers. Management can be improved through pelletization – the compression of straw into pellets – which increases its energy density while reducing transport and storage volumes. However, the research shows that real improvements occur when using a mix of substrates. Let’s discover which combination could be the most efficient in this interview.
