Whey disposal in dairies: could biogas be a solution?

Various methods are used to dispose of whey in Italy: it can be used in pig feed, in the matrix for biogas plants, or simply sent to landfill. What is the best solution that a cheese-producing company can use for this disposal? Giuseppe Lembo, of the Università della Tuscia – ENEA, has examined the actual case of a company in Rome that currently pays transport costs for disposal and has performed a cost-benefit analysis on the installation of a biogas plant.
